Stage 1 - We will sit down and ask you for various

procedures, disabled fire procedures, PAT testing records, electrical wiring certificates, boiler services records and any
other records relating to fire safety such as lightning conductor testing, metal fire escape test certificates etc. Stage 2 - We will walk around your building with you and look in every
room and cupboard - so make sure you have a large bunch of keys with you. We will ask questions about staff, processes,
other uses of the building, previous fires, visits from the fire service and a host of other questions. Don't worry, we
will not be judging your building or the procedures that you have in place. We just want to make sure that we make you aware
of the latest requirements and best practices to ensure that you comply with the Fire Safety Order 2005.
After the visit we will go away and write your report and get
it to you as soon as possible. The report will provide details of our visits and what we saw. The really important part is
the list called "Significant findings". We will attach a suggested schedule so that you can carry out the simple
changes quickly and provide you with advice on how to implement the more substantial changes you may require.

Keeping your business safe from fire - a few tips for responsible persons
1) Have an up to date fire risk assessment - this will will highlight any
significant findings and provide you with a schedule to action any deficiencies in your fire safety measures.
2)
Produce a fire emergency plan - have regular meetings with key staff to ensure that the plan is still fit for purpose. Also
make sure that all staff are aware of the plan and that the contents of it are covered in staff fire training sessions.
3) Review the fire evacuation plan on a regular basis - Minor changes to work practices and staff levels can occur
and over time changes can be significant. Ensure that your fire evacuation plan still works by holding frequent fire drills
at different times of the day.
4) Consider having fire suppression systems installed in high risk areas such as
kitchens, boiler rooms, server rooms. You may also consider that sprinklers in all of the building is a worthwhile option.
This may lower your insurance premiums and ensure that your business remains operational in the event of a fire.
5) Maintain your fire safety equipment - Many organisations will have their fire extinguishers and fire alarms tested but
there are other items that need testing. These include emergency lighting, lightning conductors, metal fire escapes, sprinkler
systems, suppression systems, private hydrants, PAT testing, electrical wiring and boilers.
6) As well
as maintenance of the above remember that there are also tests and checks that a manager or his/her representative must do
- ie monthly flick tests of emergency lighting, daily check of fire panel, weekly test of the fire alarm, monthly or quarterly
inspection of fire extinguishers etc.
7) Do not forget frequent staff fire training and fire drills. All persons
with responsibility in the fire procedures must be trained. These include persons who call the fire service, fire marshals,
fire wardens, those who liaise with the fire service, buddies etc.
